I must misunderstand the term “racism”

13 05 2009

I read a story yesterday about an African-American gentleman who has decided that if he can’t buy something from an entirely African-American owned business, he won’t be buying.  He goes on to say that he’s willing to do without if he can’t purchase what he needs from a such a business.  He’s being lauded in the media as a hero.

What would happen to me if I made a similar statement?  What if I publically proclaimed that, ”I’m only going to shop at businesses that are owned by white people.”?  I’m pretty sure the media would be calling me something, too.  And I don’t think it would be ”hero”.

Isn’t this a double-standard?  What am I missing here?

It is a double standard by the media. I do not have any problem with this guy doing this, though. I know people that shop “local” only, “American” only, and “Christian” only. I don’t have a problem with them either. I think he is making a mistake being so public about it. The same media outlets lauding him now could come back to slam him if/when he slips up. I don’t get along real well with the people that think I should follow the same purchasing practices that they do. I hope he is in an area that gives him this opportunity. Because if he lived near me, he would be doing without quite a bit.

That’s right, Dave. The double-standard that exists is with the media. And I should have been more clear in the original post with regard to that. Thanks for clarifying.

This guy can shop wherever he chooses.

America is great like that.
