We had a fantastic day in worship, discipleship, and evangelism yesterday. The worship services were so uplifting to me personally. Our discipleship training program is going very well on Sunday evenings. Our FAITH outreach contacted over 70 homes in just over an hour and we got to present the gospel 4 times. Four people joined our fellowship yesterday morning. It was an awesome day.
Then today as I’m riding this wave of God’s awesome activity among His people, I had a most unfortunate encounter with a very bitter and ignorant person. My first reaction was anger. But that soon melted into pity. How can you get (or remain) angry with a person who is so willfully ignoring all that God is so obviously doing? How can you do anything but pity one who chooses to dwell on some perceived wrong-doing to them personally and totally ignores the majesty of The One for Whom we live and move and have our being?
As long as there are church people who believe that what goes on in the life and ministry of a local fellowship revolves primarily around them and their sense of right and wrong, there are going to be experiences like I had today. But, man, I wish these types of things didn’t have to occur.
Heavenly Father, would you help us all take a deep breath today and finally and firmly come to the realization that church is ever and always about You and never about us? When the joy-stealers who represent the vast minority of the church body show their ugliest sides, don’t allow Your remnant to descend into their bitterness and anger. Move us only to pity. Please enable us to move forward toward Christian maturity and stop acting like spoiled children. May we affirm today that we exist only for Your glory and put our selfishness away once and for all. In Jesus’ Name….
