American Idol is now well into its 7th season. I confess that I’m a fan of the show. I especially like the very first episodes of try-outs. Everyone thinks that Simon is a villain. I don’t.
Here’s what happens in a typical Simon Cowell moment….
1. There are apparently hundreds of thousands of people in America who think that they are gifted vocalists.
2. These disillusioned people hear their own voices much differently than anyone else hears them.
3. These poor people have been misled their entire lives by family and friends telling them that they can sing.
4. They try out for American Idol and Simon (and increasingly Randy or Paula) tells them in a very straight-forward manner that they should not pursue singing any longer…..that those who tell these wanna-be’s they are good singers have been lying to them their whole lives.
What’s wrong with that? We need more of this kind of attitude in our pulpits.
Pastors, it’s high time that we cared more about people hearing the truth than we care about how much people will like us when the sermon is over. I understand that there is more than one way to approach the subject of “truth”, but may we never be guilty of coming up just short of letting people know the wages of sin and the magnificent offer of The Savior and His claims on our lives…however offensive that message may be.
